Evangelist Paul Washer's Garbage Theology

By David J. Stewart | May 2015 | Updated November 2017

Romans 10:13-14, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?”

Perhaps you say, “You shouldn't call Paul Washer's religious teachings 'garbage.” Ok, then when you build your own website ministry, don't say it. I'm telling you... PAUL WASHER'S RELIGIOUS TEACHINGS ARE GARBAGE!!! Literally, millions of naive people have watched and have been influenced by Paul Washer's demonic videos, which all promote the damnable heresy of Calvinism. Paul Washer's lies need to be exposed, which I am faithfully doing right now! Please understand that I have nothing personal against Mr. Washer. In fact, I have often prayed for him, sympathizing with his hip replacement surgery (both hips) and constant bodily pain, as I also suffer from constant toothache-like pain (in the bony area of the back of my neck). Paul has a bunch of stainless-steel parts in his body and suffers in continual pain (he talks about it in this question and answer session). My heart goes out to the guy and I actually like him, but I believe he is wrong on salvation. So this is not a personal attack against Paul Washer; but rather, I am set for the defence of the Gospel.

In this YouTube video, Paul Washer teaches that the way to “KNOW” you are saved is by works. Paul says making a decision to receive Jesus Christ is not enough to be saved. Paul adds the unbiblical requirement to prove you are saved by works. ...

“And so how do you know you are saved? ... Paul says, 'I'll tell you what's the evidence of whether or not you are saved' ... 'Are you a new creature? Has God changed you from the inside out?' You see, Salvation is not: 'I have made my decision.' Salvation is, God literally (this is not poetry), God literally does a supernatural recreating work in a Christian, takes out his God-hating heart—a heart that doesn't care about God, that doesn't care about His Word, that doesn't care about prayer, that doesn't care about seeking Him, that doesn't care about walking with Him, that doesn't care about keeping His commandments—and puts in the place of that wicked, defiled, heart; a new heart, recreated in the image of God, and true righteousness and true holiness, a new heart that desires God and wants to please Him, and know Him and seek Him. ... an entirely new creature!”

Ladies and gentleman, such religious speel sounds really good, doesn't it? But it is not Biblical. It is subtle. The problem is that an unsaved person can also experience those same things. It is called reformation! An unsaved criminal can reform, changing his corrupt ways, turning over a new leaf, and become a new man so-to-speak. In Acts chapter 10, we learn about an unsaved religious man named Cornelius. The Holy Bible says in Acts 10:2 that Cornelius was, “A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.” Yet he was lost and on his way to Hell. Wow! God arranged for Cornelius and the apostle Peter to meet together later in the chapter, so Cornelius could hear the Gospel and be saved. Thank God that Cornelius did get saved, and many others! What a great Savior!!!

Anything that an unsaved person can do, cannot be used as “evidence” of salvation. Can an unsaved person love? Yes. Can an unsaved person do good works? Yes. Can an unsaved person faithfully attend church? Yes. Can an unsaved person care about others? Yes. Can an unsaved person preach in Jesus name? Yes. In Matthew 7:21-23 we read about a religious group, who bragged of doing “many wonderful works” in Jesus' name, and preaching in Jesus' name, and casting out devils in Jesus' name; but they were still unsaved. Jesus even called them workers of iniquity! Jesus plainly said that they had failed to do the WILL OF THE FATHER. What is the WILL OF THE FATHER? The Bible tells us in John 6:40, “And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.”

The Only Outward Evidence of Being Saved is One's Spoken Testimony

The ONLY way to know for sure outwardly if a person is saved or not, is by the direct testimony from their mouth. I have met countless sweet, loving and good-hearted people in my life, who were religious but lost. I have also met horrible sinners, who did not live for the Lord, but they are saved. Jesus said the same thing. Jesus rebuked the unsaved religious chief priests and the elders in Matthew 21:31b, “Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.” Folks, don't miss this! What Jesus said here totally contradicts Paul Washer's foolish preaching. Jesus told the religious leaders, who were respected and revered by the people, that the crooked tax collectors (i.e., publicans) and adulterous prostitutes were going to Heaven, but they weren't!!! According to Mr. Washer, the crooked tax collectors couldn't have been saved, because they were still abiding in deliberate sin. Jesus didn't say “former” crooks and prostitutes! You see, the Jewish religious leaders were self-righteous, going about to establish their own righteousness; whereas the publicans and harlots had submitted themselves to God's righteousness , which is through faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 10:3-4).

What Paul Washer is teaching is dangerous junk theology. If our performance is evidence of our conversion, then many people are going to end up in Hell, because they wrongly judged them self as being born-again by their changed life, instead of wholly submitting themselves to God's imputed righteousness as a hopeless, guilty, sinner. Only to the cross I cling, nothing in my hand I bring!

The Only Inward Evidence of Being Saved is the Indwelling Holy Spirit

The Epistle of 1st John seems to teach that works are evidence of salvation, but if we rightly divide the word of truth, then we see that the evidence of being saved is the presence of the indwelling Holy Spirit. 1st John 3:24, “And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.” So, keep this truth in mind. Can a person keep God's commandments and still not have the Holy Spirit living inside of them? Sure, of course! So they are still as lost as a moose in a caboose in a Cleveland blizzard! That's really lost my friend!

Please consider the following heresy by Paul Washer...

So you see, my dear friend, the one who says, 'I have come to know Him,' and does not keep His commandments is a liar and the truth is not in Him. ... We all struggle in our heart. At times there's dullness. At times, man, I just don't want to get up and read the Word. But if you look at the style of life, you will see a great change between when we were unconverted and now that we are.

Paul Washer is requiring works to seal one's salvation, which is heresy! He openly rebukes soul-winning Baptists who preach easy-believism. According to Mr. Washer, you cannot simply believe the Gospel and write down your name, date and place where you were saved. Paul contends that your life must prove your profession of faith, which means you cannot KNOW you are saved instantaneously, as it takes time to prove that you've been CHANGED. Paul literally calls soul-winning evangelists “stupid” for teaching that a sinner can immediately be born-again and know in an instant that they are saved. But my friend, like it or not, this is THE GOSPEL. In Acts 2:41, a precious 3,000 souls were immediately saved in one day, and there was no further evidence required...

Heretic, Paul Washer, who teaches that salvation is dependent upon one's continued belief and repentance.“We talk about the Germans of the 20th century that brought on their higher criticism. It is not near as dangerous as conservative Baptists with their gospel reductionism. How dare we, all these stupid evangelists walking around telling men after they've made some little prayer that they need to write their name in the back of their Bible, and put the date and if the Devil ever comes to them, they need to show him that. That is Roman superstition, it is not the gospel of Jesus Christ. You see we've turned the gospel into a flu-shot.”

Mr. Washer is a false prophet! He teaches the lies of John Calvin. This is Galatianism, that is, partial faith in Christ plus works to be saved. If a professed believer doubts their salvation, it is only because they fail to fully grasp the Gospel. For this reason, I highly recommend the 24-part Bible study series by Pastor Max D. Younce, called, “SO GREAT SALVATION.” Dr. Younce proclaims the clarity and simplicity of the Gospel, so that even a small child can understand it. This is how God meant the Gospel to be, simple and easy. My friend, the Gospel is not Good News to be lived, it is Good News to be believed. Eternal life is a free gift from God.

By focusing upon a changed life as evidence of salvation, instead of the presence of the indwelling Holy Spirit, Mr. Washer has completely changed and perverted the truth of the Scriptures. And please keep in mind that we must distinguish between inward evidence verses outward evidence. There is no way that I can determine whether someone is saved or not by becoming a fruit inspector. The fruit of the Spirit can be outwardly imitated by any unsaved person. Galatians 5:22 lists nine “fruits” of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance. Can an unsaved person have those good qualities? Yes, sure they can! A changed life is not evidence of being born-again!

Even the Best Saints Still Do Devilish Things Sometimes

The Holy Bible is full of saints who lived like devils! Samson went with harlots. Noah was a drunkard. David commit adultery with Bath-sheba, impregnated her, and then sent an assassin to murder her husband. These were God's men! Solomon was a sex pervert, who couldn't control his lustful desires. Jonah disobeyed and fled from God's will. Jacob was a conniving thief. Abraham was a liar. Sarah laughed at the promise of God. Judah went with a prostitute. Joseph's half-brothers betrayed and tossed him into a pit. Isaiah was a man of unclean lips. Peter cursed the name of Christ and quit the ministry. When Jesus raised up from the dead and found Peter, he was butt-naked in public. Demas loved the world and forsook the ministry. I could go on and on about saints who did evil.

I receive many e-mails from web visitors, who are worried that they may not be saved, because of an ongoing struggle with sin in their daily life. Folks, if your only hope for Heaven is what Jesus Christ did on the cross to pay for your sins, and that He has raised up physically from the dead the third day, you are saved!!! Nothing else is required. If you have a desire to deliberately sin, and you are allowing horrible things in your personal life that ought not be there, it has nothing to do with whether you are saved or not. If you are truly saved, the Holy Spirit lives inside you, and He will convict you about the sin in your life. Hebrews 12:6-8, “For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.” So here we see clearly, that you are not saved if you go without chastisement from the Lord. Since we ALL sin, we ALL receive chastisement from the Lord. God said that, not me. Granted, a believer's heart can become calloused, but at some point God WILL intercede and deal with that child of His. If you can sin without chastisement from the Lord, you are a bastard (illegitimate) according to Hebrews 12:6-8.

When a believer sins (and we all do oftentimes), we should feel horrible about it because the Holy Spirit convicts us. If we hear somebody curse in God's name, our heart should cringe with objection. I was gloriously saved at age 13 and since that very day until now, I have known the convicting, teaching and comforting blessed presence of God's Holy Spirit in my soul. It is not possible to believe the Gospel and not be indwelt with the Holy Spirit, for the very term “born again” refers to being born anew from above by God. John 1:12, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”

The Holy Bible Teaches Easy-Believism

Salvation is a new birth. Paul Washer perverts this truth, instead teaching that a person's salvation is not certain until one's life validates their profession of faith. Mr. Washer scoffs and criticizes the practice of writing down one's name, date and place where they were born-again. He even calls such conservative Baptists “stupid.” The important thing in exposing Paul Washer is to ALWAYS look to the Scriptures. What saith the Scripture? In Acts 2:41 we read that 3,000 souls were saved (added to the Church) in one day. Peter preached the Good News (Gospel) on the Day of Pentecost. This event happened 50 days after Jesus raised up bodily from the dead. Several tens of thousands of people attended this historical event in Jerusalem! A beautiful 3,000 souls were saved, simply by BELIEVING the truth of the Gospel. The Bible doesn't say that their faith needed to be proven over time, as Paul Washer errantly teaches. No, they were assumed saved certain because of their profession of faith, and they were subsequently water baptized.

Paul Washer has some very strange ideas about theology. He teaches that God doesn't give people “a choice” to be saved. The reason why, according to Mr. Washer, is that everyone intensely hates God and would never come to Christ of their own free will. Therefore, as Calvinists (i.e., followers of the heretic John Calvin) believe, Washer says that God forces certain people of His own choosing to be saved. If God doesn't choose you, you go to Hell. This heresy is called “election.” Such wicked heresy goes totally contrary to the Word of God. Notice in our text verse from Romans 10:13 that the Bible invites anyone to be saved, saying, WHOSOEVER shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Whosoever means anybody, including me and you!!! If God chooses who goes to Heaven and who goes to Hell, then the Bible would never offer such as invitation to “WHOSOEVER.”

Paul Washer says that unsaved people cannot come to God because of their spiritual blindness. Mr. Washer foolishly attempts to use the resurrection of Lazarus from the dead to prove his heresy. He says that Lazarus couldn't obey Christ's command to “come forth” until Lazarus was first resurrected in order to respond. Effectively, Washer is teaching that Jesus' words alone cannot raise the dead; but rather, the dead have to raise up first (become alive) before they can respond to Christ's commands. What garbage theology!

My friend, Lazarus had been cold dead for 4 days and his body stinketh. John 11:39, “Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.” May I kindly remind you that Jesus spoke to the wind and the water, and they obeyed Him!!! Matthew 8:27, “But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!” If Jesus could speak the universe into existence by the power of His Words, do you not think that He could raise the dead? According to Paul Washer, a dead man cannot respond, so Lazarus had to raise up alive first, before he could obey the Lord's command to “come forth.” That is a lack of faith in the Lord and false teaching.

Washer likens this analogy to getting saved. In his false plan of salvation, Washer says that a man must first be born-again against his will, so that he can then obey God with his will. Here's what Paul Washer states:

“You have been raised on this: 'If you believe in Jesus you will be born-again'; All the early Baptist confessions say: 'ye must be born-again in order to believe in Jesus.' That's the difference!”

SOURCE: Evangelist Paul Washer; YouTube video, “'I don't understand Election' Paul Washer answers” (time, 7:05).

What utter heresy! There's nothing in the Holy Bible which says a person cannot believe on Jesus as their personal Savior until they've first been born-again. Effectively, Paul Washer is saying that you cannot be saved until you've first been born-again, which is ridiculous. That's like saying you can't enter into your home until you're already in your home. Paul Washer doesn't even make sense.

Notice what the Bible teaches in 1st Corinthians 1:21, “For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” Notice that GOD SAVES THEM THAT BELIEVE!!! Amen! The Word of God doesn't say that God saves those who first get born-again as Paul Washer teaches. The Holy Bible says that GOD SAVES THEM THAT BELIEVE!!! You are saved (born-again) the very moment that you believe.

The Bible teaches in Hebrews 4:2 that Moses preached the Gospel in the Wilderness. Hebrews 4:2, “For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.” The Jews wandered around for 40 years trying to find their way out of a desert Wilderness, but couldn't. Although Moses preached the Gospel (Good News) of the coming Messiah to them, they didn't believe it. Clearly they had a CHOICE!

Everything in the Bible teaches that we are saved by simply BELIEVING the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Acts 10:43, “To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.” The Bible teaches that you are born-again the moment you receive Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God. John 20:31, “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” John 6:28-29, “Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.”

Also, Jesus continually made an appeal for the Pharisees to repent and believe. Now, if God chooses who gets saved and who does not, then why would Jesus waste His effort and time trying to convert the self-righteous religious leaders? If God chooses who gets saved and who doesn't, then what's the use of going soul-winning? Why did God institute the The Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20? If Washer is right, then why does Proverbs 11:30 say, “he that winneth souls is wise”? That means if you don't win souls as a Christian believer, you are a fool.

Notice Paul's method for winning souls to Christ... Acts 28:23, “And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.” First, you expound the Word of God to a person by teaching the Gospel. Second, you testify how you were saved. Third, then you persuade them to receive Christ as their own personal Savior. This is how Paul did it. Now if Paul Washer is correct that no one can choose to believe the Gospel of their own freewill, because all men are 100% evil haters of God, then why would the Apostle Paul waste his time persuading sinners to come to Christ in faith? Clearly, Washer is incorrect, and we all do have a God-given freewill to make our own choice concerning Christ. I chose to receive Christ as my personal Savior at age 13, believing the Gospel, and I hope you will too if you haven't already.

You Don't Have To Repent of Sin to Be Saved, You Must Be 100% Sinless to Go to Heaven

More Self-Incrimination Damnable Evidence By Paul Washer

Evangelist Paul Washer is one of the most dangerous false teachers behind America's pulpits! Beware of the Devil's lie of Calvinism, which is not the Gospel of free grace!!! The true Gospel only focuses on CHRIST, but a false gospel focuses on YOU! Run away from any corrupt preacher (or bad Bible college like Bob Jones University) who teach that YOU must repent of YOUR sin to be saved. No such thing is taught in the King James Bible!!! The Bible says that all of our righteousness is as “filthy rags” to God (Isaiah 64:6). The truth is that no man has ever turned away from his sins (Ecclesiastes 7:20). Dear reader, you don't have to repent of your sinning to get to Heaven, you must be totally 100% perfect and sinless. Obviously that is IMPOSSIBLE, which even Christ said Himself (Matthew 19:25-26).

That is why God sent His only begotten Son into the world, to pay our debt of sin for us (2nd Corinthians 5:21). Hence, we are saved by “GOD'S RIGHTEOUSNESS,” through faith alone in Jesus Christ (Philippians 3:9; Romans 10:3-4). That is not what Paul Washer is preaching! Look at this nightmarish garbage that Evangelist Rap Comfort preaches! Folks, the Bible is abundantly clear that there is only ONE GOSPEL (Galatians 1:6-9). 1st Corinthians 15:1-4 defines that Gospel of Christ's death on the cross for our sins, His burial, and miraculous bodily resurrection three days later for our justification (i.e., our faith in Him is not in vain). What an awesome Savior!!!

I don't care how rotten in character, sinful in behavior or contemptible in reputation you may dear friend, if you're resting in Christ's death on the cross for your sins, His burial and physical resurrection as your only hope for Heaven, you are 100% WASHED of your sins and legally DECLARED RIGHTEOUS in God's sight (Hebrews 4:10-11; 1st Corinthians 6:9-11; Romans 5:6-9). Every believer falls IN GRACE, never FROM GRACE (Romans 5:20). The only one's who fall FROM GRACE are those self-righteous heretics like Marty Herron, Steve Pettit, Paul Washer, Sam Horn, Charles Phelps, John MacArthur, John Piper, Adrian Rodgers, Ray Comfort and other Calvinists who ADD works to faith (Galatians 5:4). Adding even the slightest thing to faith alone negates salvation and prevents the new birth. The Devil's greatest weapon has always been to con people into living the Christian life without ever being born-again.

One Heresy Necessitates a Whole System of Heresies

Please understand that Calvinism is a classic example of buttoning a shirt the wrong way. That is, if you get the first button wrong, then all the buttons will be wrong. This is why I often harp and preach against the Satanic counterfeit Bible versions in today's churches, because if you've got a corrupt Bible, then everything else is going to follow along in doctrinal error. The confusion caused by having several dozen different Bible versions to sift through in search of God's truth, consequently results in a spirit of mediocrity, indifference and discouragement in all things pertaining to the Christian life. My fire, drive and intensity as a preacher is fueled by knowing that I hold in my hand God's inerrant, infallible, perfect, preserved, incorruptible, inspired, holy, pure, Words of God, and I am referring only to the Authorized King James Bible!!!!!!!

The doctrinal system of Calvinism is commonly summarized in five principles:

  1. John Calvin was a religious heretic who taught that man is so totally depraved (called Total Depravity in Calvinism) that he cannot come to God.

  2. Well, then how can man come to God? Hence, a second heresy was begotten (Called Unconditional Election) which says that God chooses (or elects) who will be saved and who will stay lost.

  3. And then this created another dilemma, because why would Christ die for men whom God in His foreknowledge knew would go to Hell forever? So a third heresy was fabricated (called Limited Atonement in Calvinism), which says that Jesus only died on the cross for believers (the elect, or chosen).

  4. And so if God chooses people to be saved, then He must also force them to be saved (and this heresy is called Irresistible Grace in Calvinism). John Calvin taught that God elects a select few to be saved, and then He let Jesus Christ die only for that special elect group. And now by irresistible grace, God forces those that He elected to be saved. Do you see how one false doctrine begets another out of necessity?

  5. And finally, there is the fabricated doctrine of the Perseverance of the Saints in Calvinism. Since Calvin taught that God chooses and forces certain people to be saved, and Christ only died for that group, then it wouldn't make sense that such elect would have a freewill to live any way they choose, and still be saved. So the heresy was created which says that a believer will persevere in holy living, otherwise they were never saved at all. This is where the popular heresy of Lordship Salvation mostly originates. In fact, Paul Washer, John MacArthur and other kingpins of the Lordship Salvation heresy are all devout Calvinists. From my own experience, I have discovered that many pastors who love, promote and distribute John MacArthur's books and materials haven't a clue about MacArthur's heresy on the blood of Christ (he says Jesus' blood is not on the mercy seat in Heaven), or his belief in predestination (i.e., God chooses and forces who will be saved), and so they ignorantly go along. MacArthur is a false prophet, unsaved, and needs to be exposed. No man who denies that Jesus' blood is on the mercy seat in Heaven is a born-again Christian!!! I hope you see how being wrong on one critical doctrine can alter everything else you believe. The great need in our churches today is to strengthen the basic fundamentals of the Word of God.

These 5 heresies are often summed up with the acronym “T-U-L-I-P.” To understand the dangers of Calvinism, please read, “Why I Disagree With All 5 Points Of Calvinism,” by Dr. Curtis Hutson. Thank you for reading this article. END
