The Ecumenical Danger Of 'The Jesus Film'
By David J. Stewart | January 2015
Galatians 1:8, “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”
There is a woeful evil in America, that is, promoting a shallow message of the life of Christ without warning lost sinners of the dangers of false religion. As an example: the biggest satanic religious cult in the world is Roman Catholicism, but you'll have to look long and hard to find a proclaimed “Gospel preacher” nowadays that dare criticize the damned Catholic church. It is apostasy! The Holy Bible teaches that the Roman Catholic church is CURSED by God, because they teach ANOTHER GOSPEL.
There is a popular film produced by Campus Crusade For Christ (CRU) being promoted amongst the churches titled, “THE JESUS FILM,” which presents the basic life of Christ. You can watch the 2:07 hour film for free on YouTube here. The true Gospel message should convict people of their participation in a false religious system, bringing them to saving faith in Christ Jesus, not make them more comfortable in their lost state. Catholics are taught that there is no salvation apart from water baptism into the Catholic church.
Catholics are taught that water baptism is the door into the church, which brings salvation. In sharp contrast, we read in 1st Timothy 2:5, “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” Jesus is the only Mediator between God the Father and man. The Church cannot bring salvation to anyone. Only Jesus has the nail-scared hands and feet, so only by faith in Christ can we be saved. Philippians 3:9, “And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith.”
The Campus Crusade For Christ organization states . . .
JESUS film to help cause 66 million exposures to the gospel, 12 million indicated decisions for Christ, 5 million initial discipleship follow-ups, and 42,000 planted churches and preaching points. Those new disciples and churches are continuing.Since our early days as a ministry, we have stressed the importance of winning people to Christ, building them in their faith and sending them out to do the same. As spiritual multiplication occurs, the life-changing gospel spreads from life to life—eventually to entire networks of families and friends, and to whole communities and nations.
Obviously, this involves many ministries, local churches and denominations. For example, we have worked with one denomination to use the
A few years ago, we helped form the Global Alliance for Church Multiplication. This is a group of 27 organizations committed to planting 5 million house churches/fellowships by the end of 2020. The main strategies used involve spiritual multiplication.
CRU claims to have received 12,000,000 professions for Christ. I am very doubtful of that claim, not because it is difficult to be saved, but because of the extremely shallow “follow Jesus” message that they preach. Even unsaved Roman Catholics and Mormons love the ecumenical movie. At the very end of “THE JESUS FILM,” the viewer is encouraged to pray the following lame pray to be saved . . .
“Lord Jesus I need you. Thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. I confess and repent of my sins. I open the door of my life and receive you as my saviour and lord. Thank you for forgiving my sins and giving me eternal life. Make me the kind of person you want me to be, as I become one of your followers. Amen!”
There are several things wrong with the preceding so-called “prayer” . . .
There is no mention of the cross. There can be no salvation without the cross upon which Christ was crucified for our sins. As defined in 1st Corinthians 15:1-4, the above shallow prayer has no elements of the Gospel message in it. I know the movie mentions these elements, but the following prayer is unbiblical heresy . . .
1st Corinthians 15:1-4, “Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”
Christ's burial and Resurrection are not mentioned. Again, the Gospel is that Christ DIED, was BURIED and RESURRECTED.
You don't need to pray a prayer to be saved. This should always be stated to the lost sinner when witnessing. Although it is not wrong to pray a prayer, we are saved by BELIEVING, and the lost sinner should be made to understand this. We are not saved by praying, although a prayer may accompany our faith, just as emotions and a decision to live for Christ may be made at the time of salvation, BUT if you add those things to faith, you are NOT SAVED!!!
The Bible never says to “repent of my sins” to be saved. It sounds good, but it's not Biblical. You repent of your unbelief to be saved. There is much heresy in our churches today concerning what it means to repent. By “repent of my sins,” if CRU means realizing that we are each a guilty sinner in God's holy eyes for breaking His commandments, then I agree. Repentance is “a change of mind” in the Greek—a change of mind from I want to do to get to Heaven, to what God says that I must do to get to Heaven. We are saved by BELIEVING. The Gospel of John never mentions the word “repent,” but we find the words “believe” and “believed” 85-times. Repentance is absolutely necessary for salvation, but repentance is a change of mind, not a change of lifestyle. A changed life is the FRUIT of genuine repentance, and not a part of the ROOT of genuine faith; but it is a false plan of salvation to mandate that FRUIT as a part of saving-FAITH to be saved. Romans 4:5-6 teaches that a man's faith is counted in place of any self-righteousness.
You don't have to open the door of your life to be saved. This is not a part of the Gospel message.
You don't have to ask God to “Make me the kind of person you want me to be” to be saved. This is not a part of the Gospel message.
You don't have to become a follower of Jesus Christ to be saved. This is not a part of the Gospel message.
Salvation is not doing your best, it is having Christ's best put to your account through receiving Him by faith.
