But To Him That Worketh Not

By David J. Stewart | February 2015

Romans 4:5-6, “But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works.”

In our preceding text verse, the word “counted” and the word “imputeth” are the same Greek word. The word “imputeth” refers to the act of “crediting or charging something to one's account.” To understand the Biblical doctrine of imputation, picture an inventory list. In one column are listed all of our sins. In the other column are listed all of Christ's works of righteousness. God transferred the sins of the world upon His only begotten Son on the cross, and when we believe the Gospel, that very moment God transfers Christ's righteousness upon us. What a beautiful truth.

Jesus lived a sinless life (Hebrews 4:15). Jesus was crucified on the cross, but He never did anything wrong. Jesus took our sins upon Himself on the cross. Christ bore the reproach, weight and punishment for all our sins at Calvary. Our sins were IMPUTED to Jesus. And conversely, Jesus' righteousness was IMPUTED to us. What a great deal! God did this all free of cost to us! God sacrificed His only begotten Son for our sins! I love the Biblical doctrine of IMPUTATION, because it teaches us that Christ took our sins upon Himself, and placed His righteousness upon us! Amen! Jesus is precious!

This is why we are told in Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS; and all these things shall be added unto you.” We are not saved by our own self-righteousness; but rather, by the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ which is obtained through receiving Him by faith. Salvation is not doing your best, it is having Christ's best put to your account through receiving Him by faith. That is the doctrine of IMPUTATION.

Please notice that God repeatedly says Christ's imputed righteousness comes WITHOUT WORKS... “BUT TO HIM THAT WORKETH NOT”! This means that anyone who adds human effort to God's plan of salvation has corrupted the simplicity that is in Christ (2nd Corinthians 11:3-4). God's plan of salvation is WITHOUT WORKS! It is tragic that so many of our Baptist churches today are promoting satanic false prophets like Paul Washer, Ray Comfort, John MacArthur, Billy Graham, Chip Ingram, Rick Warren, John Hagee, Beth Moore, Charles Stanley and Pat Robertson. If a preacher is wrong on salvation, then he is helping Satan. That's why I call them satanic! They are pulling on the same rope as the Devil, hindering people from getting saved.

Turning from Sins is Not a Part of Salvation

Just as Cain, who thought that he could impress God with the fruit of his own labors, so also will all those churchgoers who trusted in the Lordship of Christ burn in Hell one day. 1st Timothy 4:10 says that Jesus is the Savior of all men, and that is what you must trust Him as to be saved.

Adam thought that he could be saved by turning from his sins, sewing fig-leaves together to cover his nakedness; but turning from one's sinful ways is not salvation, nor a requirement to be saved. When Adam and Eve sinned against the Lord, the damage was done! Nothing they could have done would have made things right with God. Innocent blood needed to be shed! God killed an innocent animal to provide clothing for Adam and Eve, which pictured the precious blood shed by the innocent Lamb of God on the cross thousands of years later. It is only through receiving the sacrifice of Christ on the cross that we are saved. Just as God provided skins of clothing for Adam and Eve, so also is every believer clothed with the imputed righteousness of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

Biblical salvation is WITHOUT WORKS!!! Eternal life is a free gift (Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9). You don't earn it, nor qualify for it; but rather, you simply TAKE IT! Anybody who teaches that you must forsake the world, cease from sinful bad habits, surrender your will to Christ as Lord, make a commitment to serve Jesus, declare 'Jesus is Lord', or confess Christ before men to be saved, they are adding WORKS to the Gospel. It doesn't matter what I say or think, nor what anybody else says or thinks; but it does matter what God says and thinks. What saith the Scripture? As I have shown you, Romans 4:5-6 plainly teach that we are saved WITHOUT WORKS. The reason why is because Christ's works of righteousness are imputed to us by faith, and our sins were imputed to Him on the cross!

I dare say that 97% of all church teachings on salvation are rooted in human effort, and only 3% of our churches accurately teach the true Biblical plan of salvation that we are saved by Christ's imputed righteousness. The Gospel (good news) according to 1st Corinthians 15:1-4 is that Christ died on the cross for our sins, was buried and resurrected three days later. This is “THE GOSPEL,” by which if we BELIEVE the good news, we will be immediately and forever born-again and saved certain.

It's Not What We Can Do For Jesus That Saves Us, But What He Has Done For Us!

So many people have problems settling the assurance of their salvation because they are focusing on the prayer they prayed, the circumstances at the time they think they were saved, and other non-essential details. But the Bible teaches that we are saved by simply BELIEVING the Gospel.

You must know that you are a sinner to be saved. This is taught in Romans 3:19-20, “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” God's law was given to be used as a measuring stick, by which when compared we fall short and realize our guilty sinful condition. And thus, the law points us to the dear Savior to be saved.

The bogus teaching in many of our churches today that a person must forsake a sinful lifestyle and surrender their complete will to the Lordship of Christ to be saved is straight from Hell! As you just read in Romans 3:19-20, the purpose of God's law is to bring “THE KNOWLEDGE OF SIN,” not the forsaking of sin. Forsaking of sins is a matter of Christian discipleship and consecration, which have absolutely nothing to do with receiving the gift of eternal life. Again, the Holy Bible teaches all mankind in Romans 4:6 that... GOD IMPUTETH RIGHTEOUSNESS WITHOUT WORKS!!!

If You Don't Believe in Works-Salvation, Then Don't Support the Heretics Who Teach It!

In “The Way Of The Master Evidence Bible” by Evangelist's Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron, they completely pass over Romans 4:5-6 and don't provide any commentary on the Scripture. The word “impute” or “imputation” appears 9 times in the New Testament. Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron totally avoid this vital Biblical doctrine, not commenting on it even once. There is a 1,000 word index in the back of The Evidence Bible, yet not one mention is made of “impute,” nor any form thereof.

I'm not trying to be unkind, and I like Ray Comfort as a person, but why would any Biblical evangelist avoid one of the most important doctrines in the Word of God? In my opinion, it is because Mr. Comfort's false plan of Lordship Salvation doesn't allow for it. The doctrine of Christ's imputed righteousness blows Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron sky-high! The Biblical doctrine of the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ exposes Lordship Salvation as a fraud, a lie, a false plan of salvation!

I am sick of shallow Christian leaders who support Ray Comfort, John MacArthur and Paul Washer, when all three of these ministers teach a false plan of salvation that requires human effort. The Bible teaches that we are saved WITHOUT WORKS! God wants us to give up our sinful living because we ARE SAVED, not to BE SAVED. If you add turning from sins to be saved, then you have perverted the simplicity that is in Christ and are leading souls into the fires of Hell. Religion is the road to Hell. Satan's greatest weapon is to con church members into living the Christian life without ever being born-again! Our churches are filled with them.

Remember that Jesus rebuked the unsaved religious people in Matthew 7:21-23 for saying, “Jesus is Lord, Jesus is Lord!,” but they hadn't done God's will concerning salvation, which according to John 6:40 is to BELIEVE on Jesus Christ as the Son of God. Please don't be deceived my friend. Eternal life is a free gift, which you simply receive to have (John 1:12-13).

If you want to depart from sinful habits and commit your life to serve Christ, then good for you, BUT DO NOT trust in that for your salvation or you will go to burn in Hell forever! Making Jesus Lord of your life is not salvation, nor does it produce the new birth by the Spirit of God. You must completely and solely rest in what Christ has done to pay for your sins. Hebrews 4:10-11, “For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.” And again we read in John 6:28-29, “Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.”

Many Christian leaders today are spiritually calloused, teaching and supporting heresy, using and supporting counterfeit Bible versions, and promoting satanic false prophets who teach a works-based false plan of salvation; but they're making a living and their church is steadily increasing in size, so why ruin a good thing, right? If they'd focus on heavenly things and the coming Judgment Seat Of Christ, then they wouldn't be so indifferent, complacent and nonchalant about the matter. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

Romans 4:5-6, “But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works.”
