Ten Signs Of A Neo-Evangelical Church

By David J. Stewart | December 2015

Psalms 16:8, “I have set the LORD always before me:
because he is at my right hand,
I shall not be moved.”

Our churches are in spiritual shambles across America, which influence the world. Few Christians are aware that occultists, such as Helena Blavatsky and Alice Bailey, plotted over a century ago to infiltrate, corrupt and transform the churches to join the Devil's New World Order.

In order to corrupt the churches, Satan always tries to substitute something “new” (which is inferior) for what was old (and superior). For example: The King James Bible is superior and the only Bible today that we can trust in English. All of the new “versions” originating from heretics Westcott and Hort are utterly corrupt. May I say, the King James Bible is not a “version,” it is God's holy and inspired Word.

“Neo-Evangelical” is not a religious denomination. It is not a convention. It is an apostate movement that began in the 1940's in direct opposition to Biblical Fundamentalism. Purportedly, the term “Neo-Evangelical” was first used in 1947 by Harold Ockenga,[1] one of the co-founders of the apostate Fuller Theological Seminary (which is apostate). The Neo-Evangelical Movement was a response among apostate orthodox evangelical Protestants to the separatism of fundamentalist Christianity beginning in the 1930s.[2] False ministers: Paul Washer, Joel Osteen, Ray Comfort, John MacArthur and Rick Warren and are all in the apostate Neo-Evangelical camp!!! Moody Bible Institute is today Neo-Evangelical.

Churches don't advertise that they are Neo-Evangelical. The prefix “Neo” simply means “New.” The Devil tries to corrupt churches by introducing “new” Bible versions to replace the King James Bible, “new” methods to replace Holy Spirit power, “new” activities to replace soul-winning, et cetera. Neo-Evangelical churches replace the old-time religion with entertainment, worship services and Rock concerts. Neo-Evangelicalism is dangerous!!! Why? It is because it is a movement away from God and the clear teachings of His holy Word.

Listed below are ten major characteristics of Neo-Evangelicalism (there are countless more). Not every Neo-Evangelical church may display all ten of these characteristics, but a church that displays some of them is Neo-Evangelical at heart, which you need to avoid unless you want to be led into apostasy and the New World Order. From my own observation, there is a night-and-day drastic difference in the mindset between a Neo-Evangelical church and an Independent Fundamental Baptist Church (IFBC). Here are some of my observations of how they differ:

  1. Neo-Evangelical churches embrace the modern PERversions of the Bible.

Neo-Evangelical churches embrace the modern counterfeit versions of the Bible. Nearly all modern Bible versions were translated from an entirely different manuscript than the trustworthy King James Bible. Nearly all modern versions originate from the corrupt Greek of Brooke Westcott and Fenton Hort, two heretical, unsaved, pro-Catholic, occultists of the 19th century.

Thankfully, biblical Fundamentalists understand and believe in God's ability to miraculously and perfectly preserve His inspired “very pure” words (Psalms 119:140) down through the centuries (Psalm 12:6-7; Isaiah 59:21). As you can easily verify on Biblica's website (who publish the NIV), the proponents of the modern versions totally deny that we have a perfect Bible. At best, they believe that all Bible have flaws and are manmade. They not only reject Biblical preservation, but have dishonestly and maliciously changed the Word of God in Psalms 12:6-7 to hide their wickedness. Isaiah 40:8, “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.” Here's the Ugly Truth About Bible Versions!

An Independent Fundamental Baptist Church (IFBC) uses ONLY the King James Bible.

  1. Neo-Evangelical churches teach the Satanic heresy of Lordship Salvation.

This doctrinal disease in our churches everywhere today, infecting congregations! Tragically, this means that many of today's churchgoers are NOT born-again. What is Lordship Salvation? It is the false teaching by ministers such as Evangelist David W. Cloud (who greatly influences Baptist churches worldwide), that it is not enough to merely acknowledge one's sinnership and believe the Gospel to be saved; but in addition, a person must have sincere intention to cease from deliberate sinful behavior to be saved. This is grace plus works. This is human effort plus partial faith in Christ.

I read a heretical website today, of an alleged Independent Fundamental Baptist Church, where the pastor says salvation requires more than merely admittedly that you are a sinner; but also, he stipulates that a person must have a genuine change of heart toward sin. This is qualification for salvation on the basis of human effort. In other words, God won't save you unless you have a change of attitude about your sins, so that you are willing to stop committing them with His help. It is utter heresy! Why you ask? It is simply because eternal life is a “free gift” from God (Romans 5:15) to them who BELIEVE (Romans 1:16; 1st Corinthians 1:21).

We are warned in numerous Scriptures about adding self-righteousness to the Gospel. Romans 10:3, “For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.” We are saved by God's IMPUTED righteousness, because we have NONE to offer (Isaiah 64:6). The very idea that a person has to commit to clean up their life of sin to be saved is damnable heresy... GOING ABOUT TO ESTABLISH YOUR OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS!!!

There are literally several dozen subtle variations of the Lordship Salvation heresy circulating on the internet, but they ALL have one thing in common, and that is, they ALL place the burden of sin upon the sinner instead of trusting solely upon the blessed Savior Who bore the total weight of our sins. Any plan of salvation that requires you to give up a sinful lifestyle is Satanic! Salvation doesn't work that way. Eternal life is a gift, which can only simply be received by faith in the Gospel. Any changes that God desires in a new believer's life is His business, and He will attend to that rest assured (Hebrews 12:6-8). Neo-Evangelical churches teach Lordship Salvation, which is nothing but the heresies of Calvinism (John Calvin) repackaged.

Beware of any plan of salvation that requires a person to change their own heart to be saved. That is works for salvation. The heart is deceitful and desperately wicked above all things (Jeremiah 17:9). I heard a pastor in New York, George Bruns, who professes to be an Independent Fundamental Baptist, say on his church's main webpage that it's not enough to admit you're a sinner to be saved; but also, he says you have to “have a genuine change of heart toward sin and your God,” which is grace plus works for salvation! Dr. Bruns is wrong! It is God's indwelling Holy Spirit that makes changes in a new believer, and not the believer himself, especially not as a prerequisite to be saved. Bruns is appeasing the Lordship Salvation crowd with his false doctrine. Bruns doesn't even realize that he has been corrupted himself by false doctrine.

An Independent Fundamental Baptist Church preaches ONLY the simplicity that is in Christ for salvation, which is the Gospel plus nothing. Repentance is defined as “a change of mind” only. Any resulting changes are the work of the indwelling Holy Spirit, and not a personal desire to clean up one's act of sin (which is a wrong interpretation of repentance often used by supporters of the Lordship Salvation heresy).

  1. Neo-Evangelical churches promote smooth, non-offensive, preaching.

Neo-Evangelical churches preach easy messages that talk about sin in general terms. There's nothing more frustrating to a believer who's right with God, than to listen in church to some henpecked, wimpy, dry as the Sahara desert, soft-soapin', penny-pinchin', pink-eat-and-lemonade, compromising', pantywaist, Caspar Milquetoast, girly-boy, Charlie Brown (wha wa wha wah), type preacher!!! LET' ER RIP BROTHER!!!

I had attended a Neo-Evangelical Independent Baptist church for awhile. I couldn't stand it anymore! I would go home from church and listen to hard-preaching on the internet, because they either cancelled the preaching at church for some musical program or cantata, or replaced preaching with a Watchcare (cell group) meeting once a month, or they cancelled preaching for the Lord's Supper, et cetera. And when they did have preaching, it wasn't preaching at all. The pastor preached less than 50% of the time in his own pulpit. It's is tragic! Talk about LUKEWARM!!!

One day the church had a visiting evangelist preach, and his wife was wearing sexy skin-tight bluejeans! This is the Bob Jones University crowd folks! I love Hyles-Anderson College (they're my family), but if I ever find out that they've changed their student catalog to allow females to wear pants, I'll preach a storm against them like there ain't no tomorrow!!! It is a filthy, rotten, sin for women to wear pants, because it makes it much harder for men to war with the lusts of the flesh (1st Peter 2:11). And mainly because God said women ought not wear men's clothing (Deuteronomy 22:5).

The Neo-Evangelical senior pastor labeled me as “Old School” when I kindly mentioned a sermon by Pastor Hyles, just in a small group conversation, which taught women ought not wear pants. I didn't say it to be unkind, I was just speaking what was in my heart from listening to good old-fashioned Bible-preaching! Brother, I'm proud to be OLD SCHOOL, and at The Judgment Seat Of Christ that pastor will wish he'd been OLD SCHOOL too, I assure you! We need preaching with authority in the churches! The churches have lost their authority.

Sin is hardly ever, if ever, preached against in a Neo-Evangelical church. When I attended a Neo-Evangelical dead church, not one word was ever mentioned against sin from the pulpit. Instead, what they did was recite a church covenant once every 6-months, in which the members in the congregation agreed not to commit intentional sin. Oh boy! I'm not kidding! This was their way of dealing with sin. The church is saturated with sins, they just sin differently than the Fundamental churches they criticize. Instead of exploiting the poor once a year to break record attendance at some church event, they let the world go to Hell 365 days a year and don't even bother to run any buses or have scheduled soul-winning in the church. The sins are all still there!

A person will rarely, if ever, squirm in their seat in a Neo-Evangelical church. We all need hard preaching! Nor, will they properly grow as a Christian in a Neo-Evangelical church. However, they will “feel” spiritual. The Bible warns against the preaching of “smooth things” and commands us to preach “hard things” (Isaiah 30:8-12; 2nd Timothy 4:1-4). Please read, The Preaching That Produces Repentance, by Dr. Harry Ironside.

Independent Fundamental Baptist Churches take a stand against sin by name from the pulpit, lovingly but uncompromising and without apology. Homosexuality is preached against as a sin. The homosexual agenda is exposed as being evil. I've heard people debate whether or not homosexuals ought to be allowed into the church. Brother, if your church is sternly preaching against the sin of homosexuality, and the evil homosexual agenda of the Devil, there won't be any homosexuals wanting to join your church!

  1. Neo-Evangelical churches ignore the doctrine of separation.

Neo-Evangelical churches refuse to separate from unbelief. They dialog with modernists and adopt their unscriptural views rejecting the reality of biblical miracles, the global consequences of Noah's flood, and the literalness of the six-day creation of the physical universe along with the creation and fall of man (Acts 2:22; Genesis 6:5-7, 17; 7:18-20; Mark 10:6; Romans 5:12).

Yet, God's Word clearly tells us to separate from apostates and all false teaching (2 Corinthians 6:14-18; Psalm 119:128).

Moody Bible Institute in Chicago is highly New-Evangelical, having recently lifted their century-old ban prohibiting staff and faculty members from drinking booze, smoking tobacco and gambling. One Moody faculty member rejoiced that, finally after 20-years, he could drink a beer. It is wickedness!

Independent Fundamental Baptist Churches preach and practice Biblical separation from the world, from apostate churches, and even from themselves!

  1. Neo-Evangelical churches promote ecumenical compromise.

Neo-Evangelical churches promote unity at the cost of purity (James 3:17). They have no trouble fellowshipping with Charismatics, Pentecostals or even Roman Catholics in evangelistic endeavors. They promote compromisers like Billy and Franklin Graham.

But the Bible warns against fellowshipping with unbelievers and even with believers who have fellowship with them (1 Kings 13:1-34; 2 Thessalonians 3:14-15).

  1. Neo-Evangelical churches promote modern music and drama.

Neo-Evangelical churches have brought the world into the church and replaced traditional hymn singing with worldly contemporary music and old-fashioned biblical preaching with dramas and plays. Walt Disney is popular in many churches. Disney's present CEO is a homosexual, shacking up with another male. Why would any church promote Walt Disney's musical themes from the Lion King, Aladdin and The Little Princess?

But the Bible tells us to sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs that place the emphasis on correct doctrine using melody and not on modern music that places the emphasis on sensual rhythms and on a mind-numbing beat. And Scripture teaches that the world will be won to Christ by preaching the gospel and not by big musical or theatrical productions and dramas. (Romans 16:17-18; Ephesians 5:19; 1 Corinthians 1:21)

  1. Neo-Evangelical churches promote humanistic psychology.

Neo-Evangelical churches often support dangerous 12-step programs (like Alcoholic's Anonymous) and self-esteem-promoting Christian psychologists such as James Dobson, Larry Crabb, John Bradshaw, Philip Yancey, and others. Pat Robertson has been promoting New Age psychologists on CBN. Many churches nowadays require a senior pastor to have a degree in psychology as well as theology.

Also, women pastors and preachers are unbiblical, all of whom are false prophetesses, like Ellen G. White, Melissa Scott and Joyce Meyer, to name but a few. When a woman enters the pulpit, she is disobeying God. Only men are to lead, pastor and usurp authority in the church, home and marriage. The heathen world rejects Jesus Christ, so the Holy Bible has no place in the wicked world.

The Bible teaches that there is only one step to self-improvement and that is repenting of our unbelief and receiving Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, by believing that He died on the cross for our sins, was buried, and raised up the third day for our justification. We are all horrible sinners in God's holy eyes (Romans 3:23). Adam and Eve pointed fingers, blaming their sins on others (Genesis 3:12-13). We have no one to blame but our self. We don't need SELF improvement; but rather, the Spirit-led life in Christ Jesus! (Galatians 2:20).

Satan's greatest weapon is to con people into living the Christian life without ever being born again. Humanism, philosophy, morality, spirituality and religion have crept into our churches as a substitute for the new birth by the Holy Spirit of God. No on can enter into God's Kingdom without being born again (John 3:3).

  1. Neo-Evangelical churches won't expose false prophets and false teaching.

We are commanded warn against false teachers and denounce false teaching (Ephesians 5:11). Although we are to be patient with young believers, we are not to sinfully compromise the fundamentals of the Christian faith. False prophets should be exposed by name. False doctrines must be exposed. I've been in Independent Baptist churches that were shameful, where a pulpit committee henpecked the pastor, forbidding him to criticize the satanic Roman Catholic religion by name from the pulpit. How can you help people if you cannot warn them? Neo-Evangelicals avoid confrontation at all cost, prioritizing mammon over the love of God.

I love a church where the pastor doesn't bite his tongue, letting 'er rip, addressing controversial topics that are offensive to many people, plainly telling the truth without apology, risking all to stand for what he believes to be true and honest in the Lord's sight. God can't stand New-Evangelicals (Revelation 3:15-16), with their wimpy sermonettes that lack substance, consume hours of time, say nothing, and leave the listener in a state of frustration, unable to connect the dots. Neo's are synonymous with being Lukewarm!

A preacher should call heretics by name. Dr. John MacArthur is enemy number uno, who denies that Jesus' blood is in Heaven on the Mercy Seat, and says children cannot be saved, and adds works to grace for salvation. Yet, apostate ministers nationwide promote this unsaved religious man as a great Bible teacher. Granted, MacArthur does make some brilliant theological statements, but that doesn't change the fact that he is 100% wrong on the plan of salvation and is very dangerous on a spiritual level.

  1. Neo-Evangelical churches promote heretical writers.

Dr. John MacArthur of Grace To You is a religious Modernist (i.e., an unsaved person who pretends to be a Christian). Some would rightfully consider him a religious liberal as well. Neo-Evangelical churches not only fail to warn their members about teachers of false doctrine, but often promote such heretics as, Norman Vincent Peal (The Power of Positive Thinking), Robert Schuller (Self-Love, The Dynamic Face of Success and Self-Esteem, the New Reformation), Hannah Hurnard (Hind’s Feet On High Places), William Barclay (Barclay’s Bible Commentary), Deitrich Bohnhoeffer (The Cost of Discipleship), C. S. Lewis (Mere Christianity, The Screw Tape Letters, etc.), Oswald Chambers (My Utmost For His Highest), and countless other apostates!

But the Bible commands us to try (test) all things against Scripture (1 John 4:1; Romans 12:9). There is no controversy if you believe the Bible.

In Conclusion

Neo-Evangelical churches often draw large crowds since they are more resemblant of fun centers, social clubs and places of entertainment than a fundamental New Testament church. Neo's like to cancel preaching every chance they get, having Watchcare meetings in member's private home, replacing preaching with singing Cantatas, canceling preaching when there's the Lord's Supper.

Some Neo's share their pulpit with deadbeat speakers. I'm shocking how some pastors allow unskilled college students to preach behind the pulpit in place of the pastor's sermon, making Guinea Pigs of church members. Brother, I came to get preached to, because I need it 10,000 times more than some kid needs practice in the pulpit. Let him preach to the other students at school. Too many pastors don't take their pulpit personal, and they should! Every pastor ought to covet his time to preach in his own pulpit.

I've heard New-Evangelical idiots criticize Dr. Jack Hyles for hogging his own pulpit. That's because Brother Hyles didn't trust anyone else to love his people as much as he did, to do right by them and feed them, which he 100% did. I wish I could find a church in my area where the pastor loves me enough so that he is always standing behind his own pulpit to preach, because he's got a truth that God has laid upon his heart to help me grow in the Lord. I'm disgusted with what I see these days... Neo-Evangelical wimps, sellouts and apostates!

tend to be big, and impersonal. Unlike Christ they tend to measure the success of their ministry by the number of people they attract to their services rather than by how close they are adhering to the Word of God (John 6:58-66). If a church is pushing a 40 day, 30 day or some other number day program, beware. These are man's methods not God's (Matthew 16:18; Acts 2:47).

If you think you are in a Neo-Evangelical church then you need to show your pastor this article and get his reaction. If he throws the article away or rejects what it teaches then you're probably in one.

Perhaps you should then consider looking for a Fundamental church that you can rightly “feel” uncomfortable in.

Dr. Charles Woodbridge wrote in his book, The New Evangelicalism:

“The New Evangelicalism is a theological and moral compromise of the deadliest sort. It is an insidious attack upon the Word of God. ...The New Evangelicalism advocates toleration of error. It is following the downward path of accommodation to error, cooperation with error, contamination by error, and ultimate capitulation to error!”

The saddest thing of all is that many churches that call themselves Fundamental are actually Neo-Evangelical and don't even know it.

If you are blessed enough to find yourself in a truly Fundamental church, thank God for it, pray for it, continue to support it, and do everything you can to keep it that way. END

Beware Of The 'Young Earth Creation' Heresy!

*Note by webservant of JesusIsPrecious.Org — The belief in an Old Earth (where dinosaurs lived 220,000,000 to 65,000,000 years ago) does not discard or discredit a literal 6-day Creation in Genesis. The universe was remodeled in Genesis chapter one and mankind was created for the first time. Thus, although I believe in an Old Earth, I do accept the 6-day account of creation as we know it today as being LITERAL in Genesis. Great men like Pastor Curtis Hutson (1934-1995), Dr. Harry A. Ironside (1876-1951) and Dr. Arthur C. Custance (1910-1985) believed in an Old Earth (aka, Gap Principle), and so do I, based upon evidence.

Respectfully, from reading Dr. Brun's statement of faith, it is unclear if he is against an Old Earth view. Certainly, Dr. Bruns is against (and so am I) the heretics who teach the views of 'Evolution' (i.e., the universe evolved from a Big Bang explosion), or 'Theistic Evolution' (i.e., God created everything and then it evolved), or the 'Millennial Day Theory' (i.e., each day of creation equals 1,000 years and is only figurative instead of literal), or various other false teachings. Certainly, the teaching of an Old Earth is not neo-evangelical. In fact, as I will evidence to you in a moment, the 'Young Earth Creation' heresy is a new concoction in the churches, since the 1920's.

I agree 100% with Dr. Brun's statement of faith from his website, concerning Creation. ...

Section 6. We believe in the Biblical account of the six day creation of the physical universe, including the creation of the angels, and Adam and Eve; that this is neither allegory nor myth, but a literal, historical account of the direct creative acts of God without any evolutionary process; that man was created by a direct work of God and not from previously existing life forms and that all men are descended from the historical Adam and Eve, first parents of the entire human race. Genesis 1, 2; Colossians 1: 16-17; John 1:3; 1 Corinthians 15:39; Matthew 19:45. SOURCE: Where We Stand?

Yes, that is true and accurate Biblically!

Where did the young earth philosophy come from? The following excerpt is taken from Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia 2002:

“In fact, with one prominent exception, virtually all of the leading creationist of the 1920s endorsed either the Day-Age or Gap Interpretation of Genesis. THE EXCEPTION was Seventh-Day Adventist teacher and amateur geologist, George McCready Price, WHO FOLLOWED Adventist Prophet, Ellen G. White, in limiting the history of life on earth to about 6,000 years. Price attributed most fossil-bearing rock formations to the geological disruptions of the Biblical flood.”

In fact, it was in the 1920's that an amateur geologist named George McCready Price, and Seventh-day Adventist cult leader Ellen G. White, promoted the heresy of a Young Earth Creation (YEC).

Old Earth advocates such as myself believe that dinosaurs lived 65,000,000 years ago in a pre-Adamic world, which legitimate science also evidences. Here is a passage of Scripture from Jeremiah that cannot be ignored, which certainly seems to refer to Genesis 1:1-2. ...

Jeremiah 4:23-28, “I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his fierce anger. For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end. For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black: because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it.”

I believe that Lucifer and some the angels lived upon the earth before mankind existed. Lucifer's heart was lifted up in pride (Isaiah 14:12-13). Isaiah 14:14, “I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.” How could Lucifer “ascend above the clouds” unless he was first below the clouds? There are many Scriptures which evidence an Old Earth, such as the one we just read. When Lucifer sinned against God by trying to share the power of Heaven's throne, he was cast down to earth (kicked out of Heaven) with one-third of the angels. Good angels in the Bible always appear in their own physical bodies; whereas demons have no body of their own and have to seek a host body to posses. I believe that the fallen angels were disembodied when God destroy the earth.

In the Garden of Eden, the serpent (Satan according to Revelation 20:2) was already living there. Clearly, the Devil was already present upon the earth, and the fall of the angels who sinned happened BEFORE Genesis 1:2. I explain these and many more reasons why I am convinced of an Old Earth in my articles titled, The Bible Teaches An Old Earth; But A Young Human Race and a Young Earth Refuted ~by David J. Stewart
